Dearborn Fine Arts Club X Lions & Rabbits Mechanical Box Walking Tour

Throughout September, over 30 artists will collaborate to paint ten utility boxes in pairs throughout the month, engaging with the public as they work. One box will feature a paint-by-numbers community mural.  The utility box murals will be spread throughout residential neighborhoods home to many seniors, low-income families, immigrants, and people of color. Bringing art to the spaces where these populations live, work and gather removes barriers to arts access and participation.  

The public nature of the project allows for organic engagement with people who may not typically visit formal arts venues. The live painting, in particular, creates accessible entry points to interact with artists and the creative process.  The paint-by-numbers community mural actively involves residents in co-creation, no matter their age, ability, or arts experience. This gives often-underrepresented groups an empowering sense of ownership and belonging.  By representing the work of Arab-American, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ artists, the murals will reflect and validate the diverse, intersectional identities present in the community, allowing all to feel seen, celebrated, and connected to their neighborhoods in new ways.  At the culminating event the community will come together to celebrate the completion of the murals, especially the community box. The artist pairs will share their experiences and perspectives.
