Time & Location
Sep 23, 2024, 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM
University of Michigan Detroit Center, 3663 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48201, USA
About the event
This workshop will introduce equitable models of business and employment by walking through the basics of building a business and introducing participants to business support organizations in Detroit. Community members, business owners, scholars, and industry experts will discuss models that empower employees, foster community development, promote democratic decision making and participatory management, and provide an avenue for broad-based wealth distribution. The workshop will begin with a hands-on design game to introduce the key steps to launching a business. Then, expert overviews of new business opportunities in Detroit will be shared along with resources developed at UM. Guests will listen to lightning talks from local business service organizations followed by a resource fair featuring no-cost providers at UM and beyond to help with the startup process along with catered food and drink. The workshop is open to all community members thinking about starting a business, nonprofit, or coop, and will be particularly useful for those looking into green energy.
