Until... a multimedia exhibition by Lauren Kalman

Join us for an exhibition of object and video-based installations by artist and 2023 Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow Lauren Kalman.  Each element of the exhibition originates from a series of live-actions: first, clay vessels are wheel-thrown with traditional techniques, then distorted through being held or hugged to the body, the imprint and impact of the artist altering each vessel into its final form.  Until... was born as a response to the loss of physical connection induced by the pandemic, soon evolving into an exploration of the powerful and liberatory agency of our own bodies in shaping reality.   Exhibition components include 10-12 vessels on stool-like pedestals and multi-channel videos on digital screens. Each video is edited to present the performing body and vessels as a glitch, scrubbing forward and back in the video space. This digital glitch extends the action of misbehavior in the original action of distorting the vessels.   Together the physical objects and digital video are a meditation on mourning, control, care, and destruction. The desire to hold close. The ability to smother. A cathartic glitch.
