About the event

rootoftwo’s Anyspace? Whatever. examines the technological systems that quietly structure contemporary civic life, from surveillance networks and algorithmic decision-making to the data infrastructures embedded within so-called “smart cities.” Rather than treating these systems as invisible background conditions, the interactive exhibition brings them into public view, inviting visitors to consider their social, political, and ethical implications.

Unfolding across multiple scales of participation through tabletop games, computer-generated films, archives, prints, sculptural installations, and architectural proposals, the exhibition functions as a forum for dialogue, positioning participation, speculation, and co-creation as tools for imagining more equitable technological systems.

463NCY, an interactive tabletop game, invites participants to navigate the ethical challenges of a surveillance-driven city and imagine alternative technological futures. At the center of the installation, The Rotunda invites visitors into guided conversations with an AI system about privacy, governance, technological rights, and the future of cities. Together, these works invite visitors to reconsider the relationship between technology and public life, and to imagine how more accountable, democratic, and community-centered futures might be built together.

Anyspace? Whatever. is on view during Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit's open hours from September 2-September 20.

Special Event: Panel Discussion, September 18, 6-8pm

Through visionary projects, from public works and immersive spaces to artifacts and publications, rootoftwo - the creative and civic studio of Cézanne Charles and John Marshall - blends science, technology, and sociology with creative practice to challenge standard narratives of progress.

Anyspace? Whatever. is made possible with support from Creative Capital Foundation and the 2023 Creative Capital Award, Knight Foundation, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, and the US Regional Arts Organizations.
