What if we can design for… Possibility?

Every planning and design decision carries an idea about what people are capable of becoming. But we rarely stop to ask what those ideas are, or whether the places we create expand what feels possible or quietly ask us to expect less. Portals of Possibility is an immersive exhibition that invites visitors into that question.

Developed by the Institute for AfroUrbanism, the exhibition grows out of more than five years of research exploring Black Thriving. Through interviews across Detroit and the global Black diaspora, researchers found that profound growth rarely results from individual effort alone. Relationships, culture, the stories we inherit, and the places we inhabit all shape identity, imagination, connection, and what we believe is possible for ourselves and for one another.

Rather than presenting these findings in a report, Portals of Possibility invites visitors to experience them through a series of five immersive environments.

At The Threshold of Departure, the symbolic entrance to the journey, visitors are invited to consider what they have been carrying that no longer serves them. Using dissolvable paper, visitors write down habits, beliefs, fears, expectations, or identities they are ready to release before placing them into water and watching them disappear. They are then asked a what they want to carry with them. A collection of crystals, each representing qualities such as imagination, grace, courage, curiosity, spaciousness, or trust, offers a tactile way to reflect on the inner resources that help us move toward new possibilities.

From there, visitors enter The Ancestral Assembly, a warm, quiet, and intentionally unhurried space filled with looping audio drawn from Black Thriving Index interviews, stories about ancestry, memory, and the people who shape our lives. African textiles, upholstered seating, and an altar create an environment for reflection. At the center of the room is a growing collective artwork of suspended African beads representing our ancestors, identifying archetypes such as weaver, storyteller, healer, builder, teacher, visionary, and nurturer. Visitors are invited to honor someone who shaped their own life by placing a bead onto a large abacus-like structure. As each person contributes, the sculpture continues to grow, becoming a living record of the relationships that make human flourishing possible.

The journey continues into The Chamber of Activation, where three listening stations explore qualities that emerged repeatedly throughout the Black Thriving Index: Agency, Abundance, and Audacity.

If the previous room invites reflection, this one encourages movement toward possibility. Visitors listen to stories of people discovering their own capacity to act, imagine beyond scarcity, and move courageously toward lives they once believed were out of reach in a space filled with metallic surfaces that feels both unfamiliar and hopeful.

The next portal, Constellation | Arrival, marks a shift from personal reflection to collective possibility. A large world map traces the Institute for AfroUrbanism's growing constellation of artists, planners, organizers, scholars, cultural practitioners, and everyday people contributing to new ways of thinking about cities, culture, and human flourishing. Visitors are invited to see themselves as part of that constellation, and to carry its ideas into their family, workplace, neighborhood, classroom, or practice.

The exhibition concludes in The Commons, a space designed for exchange and contribution. Visitors can browse the Institute for AfroUrbanism's growing library, and explore the books, essays, maps, and artifacts that have informed the work over the past five years. Visitors are encouraged to leave reflections, respond to questions encountered throughout the exhibition, exchange ideas with one another, and add their own observations. In doing so, they recognize that knowledge is not produced by institutions alone; it is built through conversation, lived experience, curiosity, and our willingness to think together.

Postcards inspired by the journey offer visitors something to carry home, while the exhibition's companion publication, the Grimoire for expanding possibility, extends the conversation beyond the gallery walls.

Rooted in Detroit and informed by conversations across the global Black diaspora, Portals of Possibility offers a different way of thinking about design. It begins with the belief that design is about more than buildings, streets, or public spaces. It is also about creating the conditions where people, relationships, communities, and new futures have the opportunity to emerge.
