Portals of Possibility: What if we can design for …Possibility?

Every planning and design decision carries an idea about what people are capable of becoming. We rarely stop to ask what those ideas are, or whether the places we create expand what feels possible or quietly ask us to expect less from ourselves and one another.

Portals of Possibility is an immersive exhibition that invites visitors into that question.

Developed by the Institute for AfroUrbanism, the exhibition grows out of more than five years of research exploring Black thriving and the conditions that allow people and communities to flourish. Through qualitative interviews conducted across Detroit and throughout the global Black diaspora, a different way of thinking about design began to emerge. Again and again, people described moments of profound growth that could not be explained by individual effort alone. Relationships mattered. Culture mattered. The stories people inherited mattered.
