About the event
Explore the art and science of sound through a dynamic series of four hands-on workshops led by faculty from the University of Michigan's Department of Performing Arts Technology. Held each weekend throughout the Detroit Month of Design, this series invites curious minds of all backgrounds to discover cutting-edge approaches to audio design.
Each session offers a unique window into a different dimension of contemporary sound practice:
1) September 5, 1:00-4:00 pm – Modular Synthesis: Build sounds from the ground up using the principles of modular synthesis as you craft unique beats, melodies, and textures;
2) September 12, 1:00-4:00 pm – Sound for Visual Media: Discover how sound design enhances storytelling in film, animation, and games, and try your hand at scoring to image;
3) September 19, 1:00-4:00 pm – Spatial Audio: Step into immersive soundscapes and explore how audio can be shaped into powerful sonic environments in 3D;
4) September 25, 1:00-4:00 pm – Audio Programming: Learn the fundamentals of creating and manipulating sound through code, transforming simple instructions into unique sonic expressions.
Each workshop runs 2-3 hours and is designed to be welcoming, accessible, and engaging to the general public. All activities use open-source tools, so participants can continue experimenting and creating long after the workshops end. Come make noise with us and experience how sound shapes the world of design.
All skill levels are welcome. Participants are expected to bring their laptops for active engagement, but other participants can audit the workshops. RSVP required to attend.
