About the event

Surface Tension is designed as a social, grounded neighborhood evening rather than a formal design program. Guests move at their own pace between conversation, art, and food, with local vendors and food trucks rooting the gathering in the everyday life of Milwaukee Junction. Eating from nearby businesses alongside artists, residents, and designers reinforces the idea that culture is lived, not curated.


Public art functions here as a form of storytelling. The murals that shape the walk and the conversation are not decorative elements but records of memory, identity, and shared values. They preserve histories that risk being erased through change and raise essential questions for designers and developers alike: whose stories are made visible, whose labor is recognized, and whose presence is assumed in visions of the future.
