About the event
“The Art of Air” is an immersive balloon installation created by Detroit Balloon Store that transforms our building—formerly a beer and wine store, and vacant for 37 years—into a vibrant symbol of creativity, community, and culture. This project will create environments built entirely out of biodegradable balloons, designed to reflect Detroit's legacy, resilience, and future. Visitors will walk through large-scale, site-specific balloon installations filled with emotion, color, and symbolism—from community rebuilding themes to reimagined childhood wonder.
This installation offers not only a photo-worthy experience but also a cultural conversation about what it means to rebuild from nothing with vision, faith, and community. Designed and curated by Cathryn Coleman, 2023 Hatch Detroit Winner and founder of Detroit’s first balloon store, this installation will represent Black creativity, female entrepreneurship, and local design excellence through sculpted balloon storytelling.
