A Fiber Experience: PROCESS, TIME, MEMORIES, REPEAT

A Fiber Experience: PROCESS, TIME, MEMORIES, REPEAT honors labor and craft, while exploring communal textile processing. Activating natural resources gathered in Detroit and its neighboring cities, we aim to create an experience where people are present in time, using their full bodies to “replant” themselves in the narrative of their life. We believe that process and repetition-based practices are healing and reformative, and through Wet Felting, Cyanotype Printing, Rust Dyeing, Flax Processing, and Weaving with community, we hope to celebrate growth and the labor of love that is life. September 7: Wet Felting and Rust Dyeing

Free admission, RSVP required, ages 8 and up (adult supervision required)

Wet felting is the process of agitating wool fibers with water, soap and friction until they interlock to create a non woven fabric. Rust dyeing uses rust objects and natural fibers to create a chemical reaction that permanently stains the fabric.

September 13: Cyanotype Printing, Flax Processing, and Cordate Making

$15 Admission, RSVP required, ages 15 and up

During this workshop, guest will be guided through the meditative process of processing flax and using it to create cordage. Flax is a strong bast fiber that becomes linen when processed into a woven cloth. Cyanotype is a UV-activated photographic printing process. Fabric will be prepped with solution and guest can forage the area for objects to print with or bring their own.

September 20: Weaving and Roving

$15 admission, RSVP required, ages 8 and up (adult supervision needed)

During this session previous workshop guests will have the option to use their cyanotype, wet felted, and rust dyed pieces to cut and weave into a new original piece with their cordage.

September 27: Community Wet Felt

Final assembly of work and reflections.
