Accessibility for Public Events

This workshop invites Detroit Month of Design participants to expand their understanding of accessibility beyond legal requirements and explore how programming, communications, operations, and physical spaces influence who can participate and how people experience an event. Participants will learn practical strategies for creating more welcoming and inclusive public experiences by considering accessibility throughout the full event process.

Through examples and discussion, participants will examine how design choices, communication tools, operational practices, and physical environments can reduce barriers and support a wider range of participation. Whether you're producing an exhibition, hosting a talk, organizing a workshop, or activating public space, you'll leave with tools to support artists, staff, volunteers, and audiences with diverse access needs while fostering a culture of care, hospitality, and belonging.

Learn how to create a more welcoming and accessible event experience with guidance from Ani G. This session will provide practical tips and considerations to help exhibitors make their events more inclusive for a wide range of audiences. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive support catered to their specific event vision.

About Ani G.

Ani G Accessibility is a consulting firm rooted in the belief that everyone belongs on the dance floor. Ani works with artists, venues, and event producers across industries to ensure that our spaces of joy can adapt to different accessibility needs. She believes that we should be able to continue doing what we love as our needs change throughout our lives. This happens when our venues and gathering places are operated by and for people who understand the range of care our minds and bodies need to thrive.

Through her consulting practice, Ani helps venues and event producers understand and strengthen accessibility within their developing and existing spaces by improving operations, policies, communications, and staff practices. Her work spans venue accessibility assessments, accessible event production, artist care and hospitality, staff training, and the development of practical systems that create better experiences for guests, artists, and staff alike.

Significant clients include the Underground Music Academy, Michigan Central Station, International Documentary Association, Red Bull Arts Detroit, and Detroit's Masonic Temple. Outside of her venue and production work, Ani also leads Detroit Disability Power's Disability Access Consulting Program, supporting organizations across sectors in building more equitable and accessible spaces, programs, and services.
