About the event
Step inside Slow Stitch Detroit for an immersive exhibition, silent auction, and open studios experience celebrating the power of collaboration in slow fashion.
Collective Power features 14 one-of-a-kind jackets created by the inaugural cohort of Slow Stitch Detroit, a year-long residency for designers and fiber artists committed to building a fashion future that centers people, community, and the planet. Working in collaborative design teams, artists transformed reclaimed textiles and materials already in circulation into original garments that explore the jacket as a symbol of protection, identity, and power.
Visitors will experience the finished works alongside the stories, materials, and processes behind them. The Slow Stitch studio will be transformed into a living installation where fashion and fiber art converge, guiding guests through the journey from raw fiber to finished garment. Process displays, video documentation, and material explorations offer a behind-the-scenes look at natural dyeing, hand stitching, textile manipulation, upcycling, and other slow fashion practices.
Throughout the event, guests are invited to explore the studios of participating designers, meet the artists, and learn how collaboration, resource sharing, and circular design can create alternatives to fast fashion.
All 14 jackets will be available through a silent auction, with proceeds supporting both participating artists and youth fashion design education.
UN SUSTAINABILITY GOALS
We use Detroit's UNESCO City of Design designation as a call to action for Detroiters to embrace the Sustainable Development Goals in their own communities, contributing to the active effort of solving global interconnected issues.
