About the event

The Wayne State University Art Department Gallery will be featuring two paired exhibitions: a solo exhibition of the paintings of artist Sydney James titled Girl Raised in Detroit - Season 47, and a multi-media group exhibition of Detroit-area artists curated by James, titled Crossroads: Intersections of Black Family Culture.


James is a proud Detroit native, and since returning to Detroit in 2011, her work has not only graced gallery walls, but also the walls of buildings across the city, most notably The Girl With The D Earring which, at 9 stories tall, presides over East Grand Blvd from the Chroma building. James has exhibited her work and projects internationally, from NYC to Atlanta, from Sierra Leone all the way back to Detroit, and she is a recipient of a 2017 Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellowship.
