About the event
Join us for a screening of Resurgo, a film by Emmy Award-winning Detroit based director Stephen McGee that showcases Detroit's neighborhoods and residents, with a focus on grassroots rebuilding, community resilience, and locally driven design in postindustrial spaces. Rather than focusing on the Detroit's well-known abandoned architecture, this reframing highlights how cities can evolve sustainably from their residents up , part of resilient, inclusive urban transformation. Over two decades of filming, McGee anchors the narrative in the voices of Detroiters: artists, activists, elders, and youth, sharing their lived experiences. This approach amplifies historically marginalized communities and stories, promoting equity and acknowledgement of diverse identities in the city’s revitalization. By highlighting creative industries, local entrepreneurship, urban agriculture, and self-sustaining practices, Resurgo showcases how Detroiters reclaim economic agency, innovate in small and ethical enterprises, reimagine post-industrial livelihoods, and in doing so, foster more circular, locally grounded economies.
